The 10-piece capsule wardrobe for autumn 2026.
A capsule wardrobe isn’t a shopping list. It’s ten pieces you already own, chosen so that almost everything works with almost everything else.

Most of us reach for the same handful of things. The rest isn’t bad. It’s just hard to combine at 7:40 on a Tuesday.
A capsule wardrobe fixes that by shrinking the decision, not the closet. You pick a small set of pieces that share a colour story and a level of formality, and you rotate them for a season. Everything else stays where it is, for later.
01 What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a small, intentional edit of clothes (usually 10 to 35 pieces) that mix and match into many outfits. The idea was popularised in the 1970s by London boutique owner Susie Faux, and later by Donna Karan’s “Seven Easy Pieces.” The modern version is less about rules and more about friction: fewer choices, better outfits.
The important part for 2026: you don’t need to buy a capsule. You can almost always build one from what’s already hanging there.
02 The 10 pieces
Pull these from your closet first. If you’re missing one, note it, but don’t buy anything until you’ve lived with the other nine for two weeks.
- 1–2
Two layersA soft jacket and a sharper blazer. One for weekends, one for meetings. - 3–4
Two knits or tops with characterA stripe, a colour, a texture. These do the talking so the rest can stay quiet. - 5–6
Two bottomsGood jeans and one tailored trouser. Between them they cover 90% of your week. - 7
One dress (or a dressier set)For dinners, events, and days when you don’t want to think at all. - 8
One everyday bagLeather in a warm neutral ties autumn colours together. - 9–10
Two pairs of shoesOne light, one dark. Loafers are the autumn cheat code.
03 The 3-colour rule
Pick one base neutral, one supporting neutral, and one accent. For this capsule: black, camel and denim blue, with burgundy as the accent. If a piece fits none of the three, it sits this season out.
- Base · Black
- Support · Camel
- Support · Denim
- Accent · Burgundy
“A capsule shrinks the decision, not the closet.”
04 Turning 10 pieces into 30 looks
Ten pieces give you roughly 2 layers × 2 tops × 2 bottoms × 2 shoes = 16 core outfits, before the dress, the bag swap, or tucking and rolling. Add three styling moves (half-tuck, sleeves pushed, layer under the blazer) and you’re past 30.
Writing them all out is the boring part. That’s the part Attiri does for you: add the ten pieces, tap generate, and save the looks you love straight into your week.
05 Capsule wardrobe FAQ
How many pieces should a capsule wardrobe have?
Anywhere from 10 to 35. Start with 10: small enough to feel the difference in a week, big enough to dress for work and weekends.
Do shoes and bags count?
In this version, yes. Counting them keeps the colour story tight. Jewellery and basics like plain tees don’t count.
Can an app build a capsule wardrobe for me?
Yes. In Attiri, add your clothes, pick the pieces for your capsule, and the AI stylist generates outfits only from those pieces, then shows them on you with virtual try-on.
